Primordial Sea Dragon of Mesopotamian Myth

Tiamat is the oldest dragon deity in human mythology, appearing in the 18th-century BCE Babylonian creation epic Enūma Eliš as the personification of primordial chaos and salt waters. With her consort Apsu (fresh waters), she existed before the cosmos and was mother to all gods. Enraged by the noise of younger gods, she led an army of eleven monstrous creatures into war against them. The storm-god Marduk slew her, splitting her body to form heaven and earth, with her tears becoming the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. In modern D&D, she is reinterpreted as the five-headed (red/white/black/blue/green) mother of the chromatic evil dragons.

靑龍 · Eastern Guardian of the Four Symbols

The Azure Dragon (靑龍, Qinglong) is the sacred dragon guarding the east among the Four Symbols (Four Cardinal Gods) of East Asian mythology. The Four Symbols system — Azure Dragon East, White Tiger West, Vermilion Bird South, Black Tortoise North — represents the four cardinal directions, four seasons, and Five Elements, becoming the core of astronomy and feng shui from Han dynasty China (2nd c. BCE). Governing spring, the east, the wood element, and azure color, it is the celestial constellation integrating the seven eastern lunar mansions (Jiao, Kang, Di, Fang, Xin, Wei, Ji). Unlike the general Chinese imperial dragon, it is depicted as more serpentine with cyan scales, deer antlers, and carp scales. Best preserved in Korean Goguryeo tomb murals and Japanese Asuka-period Kitora Tomb paintings.

Cursed Treasure Dragon of Norse Myth

Fafnir is the tragic dragon of the Norse Völsunga saga and the German Nibelungenlied. Originally a dwarf — one of three sons of dwarf-king Hreidmar — he was consumed by greed for a golden hoard brought as compensation by Loki, which included the cursed ring Andvaranaut. Killing his father and driving away his brother Regin, he transformed into a massive venom-spewing serpent to guard the treasure. The hero Sigurd (Siegfried in German tradition) slew him by digging a pit and stabbing upward into his belly. Drinking Fafnir's blood granted Sigurd the language of birds, and eating his heart granted all wisdom. Central figure of Wagner's Ring Cycle.

Arabian Cosmic Fish + D&D Platinum Dragon of Justice

Bahamut has two distinct traditions. Originally in Arabian cosmography, he is a colossal fish-deity supporting the cosmic bull Kuyutha that bears all mountains of the world — recorded in Borges's Book of Imaginary Beings. However, in 1976 Gary Gygax adopted the name for Dungeons & Dragons, reinventing him as the Platinum Dragon of Justice. In modern fantasy, Bahamut is the dragon god of justice, truth, and goodness — king of all metallic dragons (gold, silver, copper, bronze, brass) and eternal foe of the evil Tiamat. His scales shine like platinum, accompanied by seven gold dragons, and he often walks the world disguised as a kindly old wise man.

八岐大蛇 · Eight-Headed Serpent of Japanese Myth

Yamata-no-Orochi (八岐大蛇) is the most famous monster dragon of Japanese mythology, a massive serpent with eight heads and eight tails. The Chinese characters mean 'eight-branched great snake,' recorded in the 8th-century Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. Once a year it appeared in Izumo (modern Shimane Prefecture) demanding a virgin sacrifice; refusal meant village destruction. The elderly couple Ashinazuchi and Tenazuchi, who had lost seven of their eight daughters, sought help from the exiled god Susanoo to save their last daughter Kushinada-hime. Susanoo placed eight great vats of sake before eight gates, lured each of the Orochi's eight heads into a different vat to drink and fall asleep, then severed all heads and tails with the divine sword Totsuka-no-Tsurugi. From its tail emerged Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, one of the Three Sacred Treasures of the Japanese imperial regalia.

Egyptian Cosmic Serpent of Darkness and Chaos

Apophis (Apep) is the cosmic serpent of darkness, chaos, and evil in ancient Egyptian mythology. Described as a massive serpent about 16 meters long, every night when the sun god Ra sails his solar boat (Mandjet) through the underworld, Apophis attacks to prevent the sunrise. Ra and his allies (Set, Bastet, Maat) battle Apophis nightly to slay him, but he is reborn each night, perpetuating the eternal cosmic war — this is why Egyptians celebrated each sunrise as a divine victory. Solar eclipses, earthquakes, lightning, and floods were interpreted as Apophis's temporary victories. Egyptian priests performed annual 'Apophis-slaying' rituals, making and burning his effigies. This is the oldest archetype of the 'great serpent of darkness' myths in all civilizations.

Indian Vedic Drought Dragon

Vritra (वृत्र) is the most powerful evil dragon of Indian Vedic mythology, the Sanskrit name meaning 'the encloser.' Depicted as a massive serpent (or limbless dragon) who blocks all rivers with his body, bringing drought to humanity. When he blocks the rivers, rain does not fall, the earth cracks, and all life withers. He is the eternal nemesis of Indra, god of thunder. The Rigveda Book 1, Hymn 32 details one of Vedic mythology's greatest battles — Indra received the divine weapon Vajra (thunderbolt) from Tvaṣṭṛ, broke through Vritra's 99 fortresses, and split his skull. Upon Vritra's death, seven great rivers trapped within his body flowed forth to nourish the Indian subcontinent.

The Sea Dragon of Japanese Myth

The Japanese ryu evolved from Chinese dragon mythology blended with native Japanese beliefs. With three toes (the fewest among East Asian dragons), the most famous ryu is Yamata-no-Orochi, the eight-headed serpent slain by the god Susanoo, from whose tail the sacred sword Kusanagi was found. Ryujin, the dragon-god of the sea, rules from the underwater Ryugu-jo palace. Featured prominently in temple ceiling paintings, ukiyo-e prints, and samurai family crests.

The Aspiring Dragon

Imugi are giant serpentine beings in Korean mythology that have not yet become dragons. They must cultivate themselves in the mortal world for a thousand years, accumulating good karma to finally obtain the cintamani pearl and ascend as a yong. Resembling oversized scaly serpents with vestigial horns, they dwell in deep mountain lakes, plunge pools beneath waterfalls, or hidden caves. Failed imugi often turn malevolent and become village-threatening monsters, though some achieve their dreams through fateful encounters with kind-hearted humans.

The Divine Dragon of Korean Myth

The Korean yong holds a unique place in Eastern dragon traditions. Featuring a long serpentine body, deer-like horns, carp scales, hawk talons, and crucially four toes (distinguishing it from Chinese counterparts), it dwells in rivers, lakes, and deep seas as a benevolent water deity. Korean myth says yong are imugi serpents who attained the cintamani pearl after a thousand years of cultivation and ascended to heaven. Inherently good and merciful, the yong symbolizes royal authority and protects agricultural communities by bringing rain.

The Limbless Ancient Dragon

The wyrm is a primordial limbless and wingless serpentine dragon from Norse mythology and English legends. From the Old English word for serpent or dragon, it preserves a more ancient form than later chromatic dragons or wyverns. Most famously, Norse Jormungand—the world serpent of Midgard—encircles the entire human world by biting its own tail, fated to perish alongside Thor at Ragnarok. English tales of the Lambton Worm and Lyminster Worm tell of village-terrorizing local monsters with massive bodies and deadly venom.

The Imperial Dragon of Chinese Myth

The Chinese long is the prototype for all East Asian dragon mythology. Combining nine animal features—deer horns, camel head, rabbit eyes, snake neck, clam belly, carp scales, hawk talons, tiger paws, and the imperial five toes—it represents absolute imperial authority adorned upon emperor robes and the Forbidden City. Worshipped by commoners as the water deity governing rain and rivers, it forms part of the five-direction dragon system (azure east, red south, white west, black north, golden center) symbolizing cosmic order.

Nine-Headed Marsh Monster

The Hydra is one of Greek mythology's most iconic multi-headed monsters, originally the Lernaean Hydra of Heracles' second labor. With nine heads, the central one immortal, its most terrifying ability is regrowing two heads for every one cut off. Heracles defeated it only with his nephew Iolaus's help by cauterizing each severed neck with fire to prevent regrowth. Depicted as a massive serpent body with multiple long necks rising from it, it secretes lethal venom from its mouth, blood, and even breath.

The Feathered Serpent

Quetzalcoatl is the central feathered serpent god of Mesoamerican civilizations, particularly Aztec and Toltec mythology. The name combines 'quetzalli' (feathers of the resplendent quetzal bird) and 'coatl' (serpent), depicting the iridescent feathers of the tropical quetzal merged with a great serpent's body. Patron of the morning star Venus, wind, learning, and civilization itself, he is famously the only god who refused human sacrifice, teaching peace instead. Massive feathered serpent reliefs at Teotihuacan still testify to his divinity.
