The sphinx (Σφίγξ) is a mythical being combining a human head with a lion's body, developed differently in Egyptian and Greek traditions. The Egyptian sphinx is masculine (usually with a pharaoh's face), serving as guardian statues at temples and tombs — the most famous being the Great Sphinx of Giza (height 20m), built around 2500 BCE during Khafre's reign. The Greek sphinx, in contrast, is feminine with wings and cruel nature — sitting at the entrance to Thebes posing riddles to passersby, devouring those who failed. Her most famous riddle ('What walks on four legs in the morning, two at noon, and three in the evening?' — Answer: Man) was solved by Oedipus, after which she threw herself off a cliff. As a dual symbol of wisdom and danger, the sphinx is a mythological creature influencing all civilizations.
Origin
In ancient Egyptian mythology, the Sphinx guarded royal tombs and temples, representing kingship and divinity, often depicted as monumental statues. In Greek myths, the Sphinx posed riddles to passersby, punishing those who failed to answer.
