Banshee

Banshee · The Wailing Death-Herald — Lament of Celtic Lore

A female spirit of Irish and Scottish Celtic lore. Attached to a particular family, she foretells by a chilling wail at night when death is near for one of that lineage. She is depicted combing her long hair, weeping by a river or outside a window. Not a bringer of death but an incarnation of grief who weeps the sorrow in advance.

Origin

Derived from the Old Gaelic 'bean sídhe' (fairy woman). The keening custom of Celtic society and the tradition of female mourners were shaped into a supernatural death-foretelling spirit.

Features

  • A pale woman combing her long hair
  • A chilling wail that foretells death
  • Bound to a particular family or lineage
  • Weeping by a river or outside a window

Stories

Appears as an omen of imminent death and an ill-boding being that foretells tragedy. A symbolic creature of Celtic-flavored narratives dealing with fate, loss, and foretold death.

Weakness

She does not bring death but only foretells it, causing no direct harm. She merely announces a fixed fate and cannot change it.
