Thor
Thor · Norse God of Thunder — Protector of Mankind
Norse god of thunder, lightning, storms, strength, and fertility. Son of Odin and the giantess Jörd. Simple yet just, he loves humans and defends gods and mortals from the Jötnar (giants). His hammer Mjölnir was believed to cause thunder when thrown, making him the most popular god of the Viking Age.
Origin
Son of Odin and the earth-goddess Jörd. Tempered by endless battle against the giants, he is the mightiest warrior of the Æsir. Married to Sif, he fathered children — yet his exploits center not on family but on the defense of Midgard.
Features
- Massive red-bearded god of muscular might
- Hammer Mjölnir — thrown, it returns; its strike is thunder
- Belt Megingjörð (doubles strength) and iron gauntlets Járngreipr
- Chariot drawn by two goats, Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr
Stories
Most broadly worshipped Norse god — patron of farmers, warriors, and sailors. Mjölnir amulets were used in weddings, oaths, and house-blessings; thunder was read as his anger.
