Baldr
Baldr · God of Light and Purity — Tragedy of the Beloved
Norse god of light, purity, joy, beauty, and dreams. Son of Odin and Frigg, he was the most beloved of the gods. His mother extracted oaths from all things to never harm him — but overlooked the mistletoe. Loki exploited this single weakness to kill him, igniting the chain that leads to Ragnarök.
Origin
Second son of Odin and Frigg, radiant in beauty and goodness from childhood, beloved by all gods and all nature. When he dreamed prophetic dreams of his own death, Frigg secured oaths from every creature and object never to harm him.
Features
- Handsome young god wreathed in radiant light
- Pale gold hair, robes of pure white
- Mistletoe — his one fatal weakness
- After Ragnarök, he is foretold to return as a god of the new world
Stories
God of blessing, purity, dreams, and justice. His death myth speaks to the transience of life and the tragedy of failing to protect the beloved — a theme favored by skalds and bards.
