Morning Star

The spiked ball weapon of medieval warfare

The morningstar is a medieval European striking weapon featuring a heavy metal sphere studded with sharp spikes. Mounted on a wooden or metal shaft, it measures 60-80cm with a head weighing 1-2kg. Often confused with the chain-linked flail, the morningstar is a FIXED weapon directly attached to its shaft. Widely used in 14th-16th century Europe as an anti-armor weapon, it delivers both concussive impact and spike penetration simultaneously, capable of defeating even the strongest plate armor.

Origin

Emerged in 14th-century medieval Europe as a response to advancing plate armor technology. When blades could no longer penetrate armor, weapons combining impact and penetration became necessary.

Features

  • Spiked metal sphere head
  • Fixed mounting (NOT chain-linked like flail)
  • Total length 60-80cm, head weight 1-2kg
  • Simultaneous impact and penetration damage
  • Effective anti-armor weapon against plate
  • Usable one-handed or two-handed

Usage

Used by both infantry and cavalry against armored knights. Common tactics included striking over shields or directly hitting helmets to stun opponents.
