Cheonyeo-gwisin

Cheonyeo-gwisin · The Grudge-Bound Maiden Ghost — A Korean Spirit Wandering With Unresolved Han

The vengeful spirit of a maiden who died unwed, bearing han. She appears in a white burial robe, with long unbound hair and a bloodless face. She wanders the living world until the han of an unjust death or an unfulfilled bond is resolved. Where the Japanese onryo spreads an indiscriminate curse, the maiden ghost carries the Korean sentiment of awaiting someone who will recognize and resolve her han.

Origin

Derived from Korean shamanism and folklore, fusing the Confucian view of marriage with the sentiment of han. Central are the belief that the spirit of an unwed woman wanders the void, and the idea of haewon — that only when the han is resolved does she attain rest.

Features

  • White burial robe and long unbound hair
  • A bloodless, pale face
  • Deep han bound to marriage and unfulfilled bonds
  • Awaits someone who will recognize the han

Stories

Appears as the incarnation of a han that must be resolved and a tragic soul appealing for truth. The most symbolic being of Korean ghost tales dealing with injustice, the laying of grievance to rest, and empathy.

Weakness

When the story of the bound han is uncovered and resolved, she attains rest and departs without resentment. Not indiscriminate malice, she softens before the sincerity of one who recognizes her han.
