男爵 · Baron — The First Step of the Hereditary Nobility

The baron is the lowest hereditary noble title in the European feudal title system, the lowest of the five noble ranks (duke, marquess, count, viscount, baron) yet clearly distinguished from commoners. The etymology comes from Old Germanic 'baro' (freeman, warrior), established as a title after the 11th-century Norman Conquest of England, originally meaning 'feudal lord directly owing military vassal duties to the king.' The 25 barons who forced the Magna Carta in 1215 are England's most famous example, renowned for their historical role checking absolute royal power. They held small estates (usually one village and surrounding farmland), collecting taxes and exercising judicial authority over their peasants. Titles vary: 'Lord' in England, 'Monsieur le baron' in France, 'Freiherr' (free lord) in Germany. Modern Britain still grants baronies through life peerages to politicians and scholars.

平民 — The Free People Who Form Society's Majority

The commoner is the free citizen class positioned between nobles and the lowest class (slaves) in feudal societies, the ordinary majority of each society. Including various professions — peasants, artisans, merchants, small business owners, lower-ranked soldiers — they were legally free unlike slaves but lacked the political power or wealth of nobles. In Korea's Joseon dynasty they were called 'sangmin' or 'yangin' under the four-occupations division (scholar, farmer, artisan, merchant), with peasants being the largest segment. In medieval Europe they were classified as the 'Third Estate' — commoners following clergy (First) and nobility (Second) — and the 1789 French Revolution saw this Third Estate overthrow feudalism and open modern civil society. Commoners are not merely 'the weak' but the substantive movers of society, forming the foundation of all agriculture, crafts, commerce, urban development, and cultural creation. In fantasy, they're the core class for the heroic narrative starting point — 'an ordinary rural youth becomes a hero through destiny.'

使用人 — Those Who Serve Noble Households

The servant (下人) was a service class employed in noble, royal, and wealthy households handling all daily chores. Their wide-ranging duties included cleaning, cooking, laundry, errands, childcare, and clothing assistance, living under the same roof as their masters' families yet separated by strict status differences. Victorian-era British great houses had the most elaborate hierarchical system — finely divided into butler, housekeeper, cook, lady's maid, footman, coachman, governess, and nanny, each with distinct responsibilities and rank. Essential personnel in European and Asian noble societies from medieval times through the 19th century, they gradually disappeared through the Industrial Revolution and World Wars. Modern dramas like Downton Abbey and the maid outfit motif have brought this culture back into focus.
