High Priest

祭司長 · High Priest — The highest religious authority who bridges gods and humanity

The high priest (祭司長) is the supreme religious leader of a religion, overseeing all rites and theology of temples and churches. Not merely a priest but a comprehensive leader controlling the religious community's politics, education, and finance, with power rivaling kings in ancient societies where religion and politics were inseparable. The most famous historical example is the High Priest of ancient Israel (Cohen Gadol of the Jerusalem Temple), the only person who could enter the Holy of Holies once a year before Yahweh. They existed in all ancient civilizations — High Priests of Amun in Egypt, Delphi in Greece, and Inca and Mayan priest-kings — and the prototype continues today through the Pope of Catholicism, Dalai Lama of Tibetan Buddhism, and Grand Shrine Priests of Shinto.
