Ophanim
Ophanim · Third of the Nine Angelic Choirs — Wheels of God, Throne of Justice
Third order of the Nine Angelic Choirs in Jewish and Christian angelology. The name is Hebrew for 'wheels' (אוֹפַנִּים, ophanim). In Ezekiel's vision, alongside the Cherubim, they appear as colossal wheels that turn the divine chariot-throne (Merkabah). They are described as wheels within wheels, their rims full of eyes. They symbolize justice, judgment, and God's movement.
Origin
Originate in the visions of Ezekiel 1 and 10. The image of 'a wheel within a wheel' is central to Jewish Merkabah (chariot) mysticism. Connected to the fiery wheels of God's throne in Daniel 7. In Pseudo-Dionysius's Celestial Hierarchy they are Latinized as 'Thrones,' third of the nine choirs.
Features
- Vast wheels within wheels
- Rims of the wheels filled with countless eyes
- Turn the divine chariot-throne (Merkabah) with the Cherubim
- Glow with emerald light or pure radiance
Stories
Invoked in meditations on divine motion, judgment, and justice. Jewish Merkabah mysticism sought to ascend to the divine throne through contemplating the Ophanim. In Catholic tradition the Thrones symbolize justice and judgment.
