The alchemist's robe is the long dark garment worn by European alchemists from the 12th to the 17th centuries — a blend of monastic habit and scholar's gown, elaborated with the distinctive symbolic vocabulary of alchemy. The basic form is an ankle-length robe in black, deep blue, or purple, with a hood serving both to shield the head from fumes and liquids during experiments and to heighten the mystical atmosphere of ritual. Along the hem, sleeves, and hood, alchemists embroidered the signatures of their craft — the philosopher's stone, the ouroboros serpent, sun and moon, planetary glyphs, zodiacal signs, and patterns from the Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus — in gold and silver thread, marking the wearer's lineage in secret knowledge. Paracelsus, John Dee, and other historical alchemists appear in such robes in their portraits. In modern fantasy, this robe — hooded, symbol-laden, starlit — defines the archetypal mage, occultist, and secret society initiate.
