Chronomancer

時間術師 · Chronomancer — The forbidden extreme of one who wields time itself as a weapon

The chronomancer manipulates the flow of time — an extremely rare magical class. Wielding slowdown, acceleration, rewind, and stop magic, theoretically the most powerful class, but time magic's side effects — paradoxes, parallel world fractures, self-erasure — are severe enough that most magic schools forbid or seal it. The name combines Greek 'chronos' (time) and 'manteia' (divination), originally meaning time divination. Late D&D editions' Chronomancer, FF's Time Mages, and Dissidia's Ulrien are prominent examples, with modern SF films like Looper and Tenet featuring time manipulators. A single chronomancer can change the outcome of war, making them objects of fear.

Origin

Time magic was a concept that existed only in theory in most magical systems, but developed into an independent class in fantasy literature and games. Chrono Trigger popularized this concept in modern fantasy.

Features

  • Time Stop: completely halting time within a specific range
  • Time deceleration/acceleration: gaining combat advantage by speeding up allies and slowing down enemies
  • Rewind: restoring to a state from a certain time ago (small scale)
  • Time Paradox: risk of world fracture from incorrect time manipulation

Usage

Combat power approaching theoretical invincibility. The counter to every class — if time is stopped to fight, there is no losing.
