The Hydra is one of Greek mythology's most iconic multi-headed monsters, originally the Lernaean Hydra of Heracles' second labor. With nine heads, the central one immortal, its most terrifying ability is regrowing two heads for every one cut off. Heracles defeated it only with his nephew Iolaus's help by cauterizing each severed neck with fire to prevent regrowth. Depicted as a massive serpent body with multiple long necks rising from it, it secretes lethal venom from its mouth, blood, and even breath.

The wyrm is a primordial limbless and wingless serpentine dragon from Norse mythology and English legends. From the Old English word for serpent or dragon, it preserves a more ancient form than later chromatic dragons or wyverns. Most famously, Norse Jormungand—the world serpent of Midgard—encircles the entire human world by biting its own tail, fated to perish alongside Thor at Ragnarok. English tales of the Lambton Worm and Lyminster Worm tell of village-terrorizing local monsters with massive bodies and deadly venom.
